MIAMI - George Pino, a real estate broker from Doral, entered a Miami courtroom Monday afternoon as his manslaughter trial got underway. The case stems from a 2022 boating accident that claimed the life of a 15-year-old girl.
Prosecutors allege Pino was operating his vessel recklessly on the waters near Key Biscayne when it collided with another boat. The crash killed Luciana Fernandez, a teenager who was aboard the second vessel. Witnesses at the time described a chaotic scene as emergency crews rushed to pull victims from the water.
Pino faces charges of manslaughter and boating under the influence. His defense team argues the accident was a tragic but unavoidable event, pointing to poor visibility and crowded waterways that evening. They maintain their client was not impaired and was operating the boat within normal standards.
The trial is expected to last several weeks. Family members of the victim sat quietly in the front rows of the gallery as opening statements began. Pino showed little emotion during the proceedings, occasionally conferring with his attorneys.
If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison. The case has drawn attention in South Florida's boating community, where fatal accidents have prompted calls for stricter safety regulations on busy holiday weekends.
