Investors looking at real estate exposure have two very different options in XLRE and RWO. One fund keeps its focus on U.S. large-cap properties and charges a 0.08% expense ratio. The other spreads its reach across 224 global stocks and carries a 0.5% fee. That gap in cost matters, but it is not the whole story.
Both funds currently offer a yield near 3.5%, which puts them in similar territory for income seekers. The resemblance fades from there. XLRE leans on domestic real estate investment trusts, with heavy weight in data centers, cell towers, and logistics properties. RWO takes a broader global approach, adding exposure to markets and operators outside the United States.
Performance has diverged as well. Domestic real estate has felt pressure from higher interest rates, while international holdings have moved on different central bank timelines and currency swings. That difference can help or hurt depending on the cycle.
Risk profiles also differ. RWO carries currency risk and greater geographic spread, which can smooth returns in some periods but adds volatility in others. XLRE offers a tighter, more concentrated bet on U.S. commercial property.
The better value depends on what an investor wants. For pure cost and domestic focus, XLRE has the edge. For global diversification, RWO makes the case despite its higher fee.
